Spotify Playlists Are Trapping My Music Taste in a Loop

Message par callenvox »

As someone who streams music for at least eight hours a day, five days a week, I’ve come to appreciate how finely tuned Spotify’s algorithm is to my preferences. With Discover Weekly and Release Radar always loaded with music I like, I never run out of something to listen to. In fact, I consistently end up in the top 5% of Spotify users every year. That's how much I rely on Spotify.

But over time, this reliance has become a double-edged sword. Spotify’s curated playlists know my taste so well that they’ve stopped helping me discover new ones. Any attempt to branch out into a new genre quickly contaminates my recommendations, making me hesitant to explore beyond my regular rotation.

Take my love for classic country, for instance. I’m a fan of Patsy Cline and Johnny Cash. However, after a few hours of listening to their music, I’ll start seeing mainstream modern country in my playlists — which I really can’t stand. The same thing happens with older underground hip-hop like Del the Funky Homosapien or Hieroglyphics. Listen too much, and modern rap invades my queue. It’s frustrating.

Sure, Spotify has added a “Private Session” mode to help prevent one-off listening sessions from affecting the algorithm. And they’ve even introduced features to refine genre-specific recommendations. Still, these tools don’t feel flexible enough for someone who wants to branch out selectively without completely reshaping their core musical profile.

At this point, I’m stuck in a loop. I want to explore, but I don’t want to ruin what Spotify has already done well — recommending exactly what I love. My music discovery feels frozen in time, and I’m no longer excited about what pops up every Monday.

Other streaming platforms like Apple Music or Tidal might offer alternatives, but reports from users suggest similar algorithmic pitfalls. Maybe the issue isn’t Spotify specifically but rather the limitations of current recommendation technology.

That said, I am encouraged by recent updates. Spotify now lets you fine-tune Discover Weekly by giving input on genre preferences. It’s a good first step, but it still lacks the nuance that more selective listeners need.

Until more advanced personalization tools arrive, I’ll keep wrestling with the balance between staying comfortable and taking risks. But one thing’s for sure — music streaming shouldn’t feel like a trap.
